About Me
I’m Paul, an independent civil celebrant based in Sussex, creating personal ceremonies across Brighton, Hove and the surrounding Sussex countryside.
I lead weddings, vow renewals, naming ceremonies and funerals, helping people mark some of life’s most important moments in a way that feels natural, thoughtful and true to them.
For me, good celebrancy begins with listening.
No two people, couples or families are the same, so no two ceremonies should feel the same either. I take time to understand the stories, relationships and small details that matter before shaping a ceremony around the people at its heart.
Why I Became a Celebrant
I came to celebrancy after attending the funerals of several members of my own family.
The celebrants I remember most spoke with warmth, care and humanity. The ceremonies didn’t feel as though somebody was simply reading from a script. They reflected the people we had known and loved, with room for memories, laughter and the moments that made them who they were.
Seeing the difference that made to my family stayed with me.
Over the years, I also found myself speaking at family weddings. I loved finding the balance between laughter and reflection, sharing the stories that made people smile and recognise the couple immediately.

Gradually, I realised this was somewhere I felt very much at home: listening to people, understanding what matters to them and helping them mark an important moment in a way that feels genuine.
My own experiences of bereavement and difficult life events have deepened that understanding. They have reminded me how precious people and relationships are, and how important it is that the moments we use to celebrate, welcome or remember them are treated with care.
Today, my celebrant services across Brighton and Sussex are built around that same belief.
Whether I’m creating a wedding ceremony, helping a couple renew their vows, welcoming a child through a naming ceremony or working with a family to create a funeral, I listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions and help people discover what is possible.
The result should never feel like a ceremony that could belong to anybody.
It should feel like yours.
Community & Values
I believe ceremonies should be inclusive, respectful and shaped around the people at their centre.
Families come in many forms, relationships have their own histories, and people bring different cultures, identities, beliefs and traditions into the important moments of their lives.
You never need to fit a particular mould when working with me.
Your ceremony might be joyful and lively, quiet and understated, deeply reflective or filled with warmth and humour. You may want to keep familiar traditions, leave some behind or explore completely different ideas.
My role is not to tell you what your ceremony should look like.
It is to listen, offer guidance and help you create something that feels right for you.
Professional Standards
Alongside warmth and creativity, I believe professionalism matters.
I hold a current DBS check and follow safeguarding and confidentiality principles throughout my work.
As a professional celebrant, I work within recognised celebrant codes of practice and remain committed to ongoing training and professional development.
From our first conversation through to the ceremony itself, you can expect clear communication, careful planning and close attention to the details that matter.
I want you to feel informed, supported and confident throughout the process.
Why Work With Me
People often tell me they feel comfortable talking to me quite quickly.
Perhaps some of that comes from my background in primary education, where listening, patience and helping people feel heard are part of everyday life. My years working as cabin crew also taught me how to stay calm when plans change, read a room and connect with people from very different backgrounds.
Growing up in a big family added something else: an understanding that families can be loving, funny, complicated and full of stories that only make sense to the people within them.
All of those experiences now shape the celebrant I am.
I’ll listen without judgement, guide you gently and take time to understand what matters to you.
Together, we can create a ceremony that feels heartfelt, modern and personal — a ceremony that reflects your story rather than following somebody else’s template.
If you are looking for an independent celebrant in Brighton, Hove or Sussex, I’d love to hear about the ceremony you are planning.
